Scholarship Programs and Application Guidelines

 The Ichiro Kanehara Foundation for the Promotion of Medical Sciences and Medical Care was established in 1986 in accordance with the wishes of IGAKU-SHOIN in memory of the late Mr. Ichiro Kanehara. Its purpose is to promote academic research and to contribute to improvement in basic medical sciences and medical care. These aims are to be attained by the following scholarship programs. Application to these programs can be made on an individual basis without any prior review or any pre-approval by the department or institution to which an applicant is affiliated. The application procedure has been changed to a web-based system. Please visit our website first and register yourself as a user by clicking on the “New registration/Login” button at the upper right corner of the “flow of grant application” page. Register your name, e-mail address, password, etc. An e-mail with a link will be sent to the e-mail address you registered. Click on the link, login successfully, and then choose the version of the application form for the intended scholarship and complete the necessary blanks. After uploading the completed form as an attachment to the Online Application, push the button “Apply”.

 Please note that an application other than this web-based application, such as by sending via post or as an e-mail attachment, will not be accepted. 1. Scholarship Grant for Research in Basic Medical Sciences and Medical Care

(1)Type of Scholarship
Scholarship grant for the expenses of procurement of material, equipment and human resources for the project in relation to the research in basic medical sciences and medical care.
(2)Amount of Scholarship
The amount ranges from 100,000 Yen to 1,000,000 Yen proportionate to the size of the project
(3)Application Period
From June 1st to July 6th, each year
(4)Application Requirements
Applicants must be under 45 years of age as of the end of September in the year of application. In principle, the application should be restricted to one person per department of the university or institution. Persons who have been given this scholarship grant within the past three years are not eligible.
(5)Application Procedure

After successfully logging-in, download the application form for this scholarship, complete the necessary items in accordance with the instructions, upload the completed form as an attachment to the Online Application and finally push the button “Apply”. (6)Selection Process
The selection will be made by the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee on the basis of a thorough examination of the submitted documents. The final decision will be made by the board of directors.
(7)Notice of Acceptance
A letter of acceptance or rejection will be sent out directly to all applicants in the middle of September each year.
(8)Payment Method
Scholarship grants will be paid to the recipient’s bank account in Japan at the beginning of October each year.
(9)Research Report

2. Scholarship Grant of “Seitai-no-Kagaku Award”

“Seitai-no-Kagaku”is a journal published by The Ichiro Kanehara Foundation which literally means “The Science of the Living Body.” “Financial support and human resource development in the area of research in basic medical sciences and medical care will be the most important factors to develop in the coming new eras.” This is one of the wishes of Mr. Ichiro Kanehara, late founder of Igaku-Shoin Ltd, and in accordance with this wish, The Ichiro Kanehara Foundation has newly established the grant, “Seitai-no-Kagaku Award” in 2016.

(1)Type of Scholarship
Seitai-no-Kagaku Award is given annually to an individual and has a purpose of subsidizing a researcher in basic medical sciences and medical care in recognition of his/her high level of originality and potential for the future.There is no restriction on the current status of the project: both research in progress and research in the planning stage are acceptable. Similarly, there is no restriction on the expiration date for the use of the grant nor on the regulation and the purpose for use. The recipient is requested to submit his/her report within two years.
(2)Amount of Scholarship
The amount of the grant is 5,000,000 Yen for the project deemed most suitable in each application period.
(3)Application Period
From November 1st to November 30th each year.
(4)Application Requirements
There is no age restriction for applicants. The applicants must be researchers who are residents of Japan but any nationality is acceptable. Researchers who have been given other types of scholarship grants from The Kanehara Foundation are eligible, but researchers who have been given a government-financed award for the same project are not eligible.
(5)Application Procedure

(7)Notice of Acceptance
A letter of acceptance or rejection will be sent out directly to all applicants at the end of February each year. A certificate will be issued to the recipient, and the final result of the award together with the recipient’s name and his/her affiliation will be announced in the newspaper “New Medical World Weekly (Web version)” published by Igaku-Shoin Ltd.
(8)Payment Method
Scholarship grants will be paid to the recipient’s bank account in Japan in the middle of March each year.
(9)Research Report
As is mentioned in the Type of Scholarship, a recipient of the scholarship grant is requested to submit to the Foundation his/her research reports within two years after the receipt of the grant. Separately, the recipient must submit a review article or an analytical article on his/her study within a reasonable span of time after receiving an award. Please be advised that this article will be published in “Seitai-no-Kagaku” with the approval of the editorial committee of the Journal upon receipt of the consent from the author. 3. Financial Support for Participants in Conferences and Other Meetings Overseas

(1)Type of Scholarship
This grant covers international travel expenses, accommodation, registration fees, preparation of poster, and other expenses directly related to participate in conference or meeting held outside of Japan. The conference must be conferences, research meetings or seminars related to basic medical science research and the applicant must be a presenter or speaker oral, poster, etc.) at the conference. If you are only planning to participate the conference, you are not eligible for the grant. The conference should be held within 12 months starting from March of the year following the application.
(2)Amount of Scholarship
Up to 500,000 Yen depending upon the geographic location of the event.
(3)Application Period
From November 1st to November 30th each year.
(4)Application Requirements
– Applicants must be 45 years of age or younger and reside in Japan as of the end of February of the year following the application. – Applicants must either 1) have already been accepted for presentation opportunities at conferences or 2) be planning to give a presentation at the conference. Therefore, those who are only planning to attend to conferences are not eligible for the grant. – In principle, the applicant should be restricted to one person per department of the university or institution. – Persons who have been given this scholarship grant within the past three years are not eligible. – Any nationality is acceptable. – If you lose the opportunity to give a presentation at the conference for any reason, you must refund the grant even after you are accepted.
(5)Application Procedure

(6)Document to be Attached to the Online Application
Please attach the PDF of the abstract (1 or 2 pages) of the presentation to be given at the relevant conference or research meeting. Please submit a preliminary abstract if not finalized at the time of application. All materials submitted will be handled in strict confidentiality and will not be disclosed outside the selection committee.

The selection will be made by the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee based on a thorough examination of the submitted documents. The final decision will be made by the board of directors.
(8)Notice of Acceptance
A letter of acceptance or rejection will be sent directly to all applicants at the beginning of March of the year following the application.
(9)Payment of the Grant
Scholarship grants will be paid to recipient’s bank account in Japan in March of the year following the application.
(10)Research Report
All recipients of the scholarship grants must submit to the Foundation their research reports within one year after the grants are paid. 4. Scholarship Grant for Living Expenses of Foreign Nationals in Japan

(1)Type of Scholarship
Scholarship grant for living expenses awarded to foreign postgraduates or researchers conducting research in basic medical sciences and medical care in Japan.
(2)Amount of Scholarship
1,200,000 Yen. (100,000 Yen per month for 12 months of the stay in Japan)
(3)Application Period
From November 1st to November 30th each year.
(4)Application Requirements
Graduate students, researchers or post-doctoral fellows who reside in Japan for at least three consecutive years, including the academic year from April 2024 to March 2025, are eligible for the application. A recommendation letter from an instructor of the applicant’s host institution in Japan is required. Within the recommendation letter, it must be specified 1) your prospective title at your host institution and 2) recommender’s signature. In principle, only one person per a lab of a university or institution may apply. Persons who have been given this scholarship grant within the past three years are not eligible.
(5)Application Form
The application form must be completed in English or Japanese by following the instructions. Please download the form from The Ichiro Kanehara Foundation website.
(6)Application Procedure
Please apply through our website after November 1. Upon registering online, you can download the application form. Please complete the form following the instructions, then upload the completed form to apply. Please note we only accept online applications. Sending via post or e-mail attachment applications are not be accepted.
(7)Published Articles
Please select one representative article listed in the application form and submit a PDF version of the article with the application form.
(8)Selection Process
The selection will be made by the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee based on a thorough examination of the submitted documents. The final decision will be made by the board of directors from The Ichiro Kanehara Foundation.
(9)Notice of Acceptance
The result will be announced directly to all applicants at the beginning of March of the year following the application.
(10)Payment of the Scholarship Grant
Every month from April 2024 to March 2025, payment of ¥100,000 will be made by wire transfer to the recipient’s designated bank account. Please note we only send a wire to the bank account in Japan.
(11)Research Report
All recipients of the scholarship grants must submit their research reports within 6 months of the end of the academic year (i.e. by the end of September). Please notice that the report will be published in the “Report of Research Results of the Grant” by The Ichiro Kanehara Foundation. [Research Report-3(MS Word)]

5. Financial Support for Subsidized Publications

(1)Type of Scholarship
Financial support for the privately-printed publications in order for the results of the research in basic medical sciences and medical care to be properly recognized by the public.
(2)Amount of Scholarship
Within the range of 300,000 Yen to 500,000 Yen per an applicable case proportionate to the size of the project.
(3)Application Period
From November 1st to November 30th each year.
(4)Application Requirements and Publication Requirements
There is no age restriction for applicants. In principle, the applicant should be restricted to one person per department of the university or institution. Persons who have been given this grant within the past three years are not eligible. The publication should be completed not later than March 31st of the second year following the application. The subsidized printed copies should be limited to required minimum numbers for making the result of the research known to the public.
