Scholarship Programs and Application Guidelines

 The Ichiro Kanehara Foundation for the Promotion of Medical Sciences and Medical Care was established in 1986 in accordance with the wishes of IGAKU-SHOIN in memory of the late Mr. Ichiro Kanehara.

 Its purpose is to promote academic research and to contribute to improvement in basic medical sciences and medical care. These aims are to be attained by the following scholarship programs. Application to these programs can be made on an individual basis without any prior review or any pre-approval by the department or institution to which an applicant is affiliated.

 Matters to be described in each guideline vary according to the type of application. Please download the relevant form, read and complete it carefully, describing the purpose of your study as precisely as possible before sending the form to the office of The Ichiro Kanehara Foundation.

1. Scholarship Grant for Research in Basic Medical Sciences and Medical Care


(1) Type of Scholarship
Scholarship grant for the expenses of procurement of material, equipment and human resources for the project in relation to the research in basic medical sciences and medical care.
(2) Amount of Scholarship
The amount ranges from ¥100,000 to ¥1,000,000 proportionate to the size of the project
(3) Application Period
From June 1st to July 6th, each year
(4) Application Requirements
Applicants must be under 45 years of age as of the end of September in the year of application. In principle, the application should be restricted to one person per department of the university or institution. Persons who have been given this scholarship grant within the past three years are not eligible.
(5) Application Form

(6) Documents to be Submitted
One set of original and two sets of duplicates must be sent to this Foundation by post. Submission by e-mail attachment cannot be accepted.
(7) Selection Process
The selection will be made by the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee on the basis of a thorough examination of the submitted documents. The final decision will be made by the board of directors.
(8) Notice of Acceptance
A letter of acceptance or rejection will be sent out directly to all applicants in the middle of September each year.
(9) Payment Method
Scholarship grants will be paid to the recipients’ bank accounts at the beginning of October each year.
(10) Research Report
All recipients of the scholarship grants must submit to the Foundation their research reports within one year after the payment of the grants. Please click here to download the form of research report.

2. Financial Support for Overseas Travel Expenses of Medical Scholars from Japan


(1) Type of Scholarship
Financial support for overseas travel expenses and/or accommodation fees for medical scholars attending meetings, workshops or seminars in foreign countries in relation to research in basic medical sciences and medical care. These meetings, workshops and seminars should be held within 12 months starting from April of the year following the application.
(2) Amount of Scholarship
Up to ¥500,000 depending upon the location of the event.
(3) Application Period
From November 1st to November 30th each year.
(4) Application Requirements
Applicants must be under 45 years of age as of the end of February of the year following the application. In principle, the applicant should be restricted to one person per department of the university or institution. Persons who have been given this scholarship grant within the past three years are not eligible.

3. Scholarship Grant for Living Expenses of Foreign Nationals in Japan


(1) Type of Scholarship
Scholarship grant for living expenses awarded to foreign postgraduates or researchers conducting basic or applied medical research in Japan.
(2) Amount of Scholarship
Up to ¥1,200,000. (¥100,000 per month for up to 12 months)
(3) Application Period
From November 1st to November 30th each year.
(4) Application Requirements
Graduate students or post-doctoral fellows, for whom the academic year following the application would be one year of a study program of at least three consecutive years in Japan, are eligible (e.g. an application in November 2015 would be for the academic year 2016-2017). Letters of recommendation from an instructor of the host Japanese institution attended by the applicant are needed.This letter must be sealed in a separate envelope with the recommender’s signature written across the seal and submitted together with the application form. In principle, the application should be restricted to one person per department of the university or institution. Persons who have been given this scholarship grant within the past three years are not eligible.

(6) Documents to be Submitted

(9) Payment Method
Payment of ¥100,000 will be made by bank transfer to the recipients’ designated bank accounts on the same day of each month of the academic year in which a grant has been made (from April to March).

All recipients of the scholarship grants must submit to the Foundation their research reports within 6 months of the end of the academic year (i.e. by the end of September). Please click here to download the form of research report.

4. Scholarship Grant of "Seitai-no-Kagaku Award"


 “Seitai-no-Kagaku” is the name of the journal published by The Ichiro Kanehara Foundation which literally means “The Science of the Living Body”. “Financial support and human resource development in the area of research in basic medical sciences and medical care will be the most important factors to develop in the coming new eras.” This is one of the wishes of Mr. Ichiro Kanehara, late founder of Igaku-Shoin Ltd, and in accordance with this wish, The Ichiro Kanehara Foundation has newly established the grant, “Seitai-no-Kagaku Award” in 2016.

(1) Type of Scholarship
This scholarship grant has a purpose of subsidizing expenses for research in basic medical sciences and medical care which promotes a high level of originality and potential for the future. There is no restriction on the current status of the project: both research in progress and research in the planning stage are acceptable. Similarly, there is no restriction on the expiration date for the use of the grant nor on the regulation and the purpose for use. The recipient is requested to submit his/her report within two years.
(2) Amount of Scholarship
The amount of the grant is ¥5,000,000 for the project deemed most suitable in each application period.
(3) Application Period
From November 1st to November 30th each year.
(4) Application Requirements
There is no age restriction for applicants. The applicants must be researchers who are residents of Japan but any nationality is acceptable. Researchers who have been given other types of scholarship grants from The Kanehara Foundation are eligible, but researchers who have been given a government-financed award for the same project are not eligible.

(7) Selection Process
The selection will be made by the Foundation's Scholarship Committee on the basis of a thorough examination of the submitted documents. The final decision will be made by the board of directors.
(8) Notice of Acceptance
A letter of acceptance or rejection will be sent out directly to all applicants at the end of February each year. A certificate will be issued to the recipient, and the final result of the award together with the recipient's name and his/her affiliation will be announced in the newspaper “New Medical World Weekly (Web version)” published by Igaku-Shoin Ltd.
(9) Payment Method
Scholarship grants will be paid to the recipient’s bank account in the middle of March each year.
(10) Research Report
As is mentioned in the Type of Scholarship, a recipient of the scholarship grant is requested to submit to the Foundation his/her research reports within two years after the receipt of the grant. Separately, the recipient must submit a review article or an analytical article on his/her study within a reasonable span of time after receiving an award. Please be advised that this article will be published in “Seitai-no-Kagaku” with the approval of the editorial committee of the Journal upon receipt of the consent from the author. 5. Financial Support for Subsidized Publications


(1) Type of Scholarship
Financial support for the privately-printed publications in order for the results of the research in basic medical sciences and medical care to be properly recognized by the public.
(2) Amount of Scholarship
Within the range of ¥300,000 to ¥500,000 per an applicable case proportionate to the size of the project.
(3) Application Period
From November 1st to November 30th each year.
(4) Application Requirements and Publication Requirements
There is no age restriction for applicants.
In principle, the applicant should be restricted to one person per department of the university or institution. Persons who have been given this grant within the past three years are not eligible.
The publication should be completed not later than March 31st of the second year following the application. The subsidized printed copies should be limited to required minimum numbers for making the result of the research known to the public.

Submission of the above presentation copy shall be deemed as a Report for this financial support.
